Fast Track Immigration Program Launched in India
In a recent announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Fast Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP) to simplify the immigration process for pre-approved Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card holders. This initiative began in July 2024 at Indira Gandhi International Airport and has now expanded to five additional airports: Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Kozhikode, and Amritsar.
Shah explained that the program aims to make traveling abroad easier and faster. So far, about 300,000 people have registered, with approximately 265,000 actually using the program. This has already expedited immigration for many travelers using e-gates.
The FTI-TTP allows qualifying travelers to avoid long immigration lines and offers a hassle-free experience. According to Shah, the initial phase of the program is free. Eventually, it will be available at 21 major Indian airports.
How It Works
To participate, travelers must apply online, providing their biometrics and other necessary details. Successful applicants will receive a notification to book a time for submitting their biometric data at a designated location. Their registration will last for five years or until their passport expires.
An expert in immigration policies noted that this program is similar to the Global Entry Program in the U.S. This makes it easier for low-risk travelers to enter the country quickly.
Looking Ahead
As more people travel internationally, the demand for efficient processes is rising. Implementing technologies like biometric recognition can significantly streamline immigration. A recent survey found that 78% of travelers prefer faster immigration options, highlighting the need for programs like the FTI-TTP.
With the ongoing implementation of the FTI-TTP, the Indian government is taking steps to improve travel efficiency. This move aligns well with global trends in border management, emphasizing security and customer service.
