How Winn-Dixie and Second Harvest Food Bank Helped Feed 500 Families at Their Impactful Food Drive

On September 11, Winn-Dixie and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida joined forces to help about 500 families in Orange County. They hosted a food drive at the Patmos Chapel Community Service Center in Apopka.

Families received a mix of fresh produce and non-perishable items. This initiative was part of Winn-Dixie’s ongoing commitment to hunger relief, marked by a generous $100,000 donation to Feeding America. This donation is timely as it aligns with Hunger Action Month, a campaign aimed at raising awareness about food insecurity.

Central Florida faces a significant challenge with hunger. Data shows that one in seven adults and one in six children in the region are at risk of going hungry. This highlights the pressing need for efforts like this food drive. The Second Harvest Food Bank plays a crucial role in the community, distributing around 300,000 meals every day to various counties, including Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia.

Interestingly, this event also celebrated Winn-Dixie’s 100th anniversary. The Apopka City Center store threw a party earlier in September, complete with cake, music, and giveaways.

The Second Harvest Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, not only provides food but also supports job training and advocates for better access to nutritious options. These programs are essential for building a stronger, healthier community.
