Oklahoma defensive lineman R Mason Thomas is set to miss the first half of the Sooners’ next game against No. 24 Auburn due to a targeting ejection. This incident occurred during the third quarter in Oklahoma’s matchup against Temple, where Thomas was penalized for a high hit on quarterback Evan Simon.
Initially, the call was roughing the passer, but after a review, it was upgraded to targeting. According to NCAA rules, a targeting penalty that happens in the second half results in a suspension for the first half of the following game.
Coach Brent Venables commented, “You put your face to their face — a quarterback — they’re going to call it most of the time.” He also mentioned plans to appeal the targeting ruling, although Michigan recently failed in a similar appeal involving defender Jaishawn Barham.
Thomas’ absence might be keenly felt as the Sooners gear up for their SEC opener against Auburn. This game also marks the return of former Sooner quarterback Jackson Arnold, who transferred to Auburn after last season.
Despite the setback with Thomas, Oklahoma had a strong performance against Temple, winning 42-3. Quarterback John Mateer threw for 282 yards and a touchdown while also scoring on a 51-yard rush. Running back Tory Blaylock added 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns to the victory.
The Sooners are currently 3-0 and appear to be in good form heading into their next challenge.
