Dallas Cowboys Make a Big Move with Tyler Smith’s Extension
FRISCO, Texas — If you had a feeling that Tyler Smith would be the next Dallas Cowboy to score a contract extension, you were right. The All-Pro left guard has just signed a massive four-year deal worth up to $96 million, locking him in until the end of the 2030 season. Out of that, $81.2 million is guaranteed.
Negotiations kicked off early in training camp. This deal follows recent extensions for other offensive linemen, including Trey Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs, who signed a four-year deal worth $94 million, and Landon Dickerson from the Philadelphia Eagles, who got $84 million.
The Cowboys had already exercised Smith’s fifth-year option for 2026, valued at $21.27 million. This strategic move not only avoids a huge cap hit but also saves approximately $1.2 million in 2025 and $16.1 million in 2026.
Smith burst onto the scene as the Cowboys’ first-round draft pick in 2022. Initially met with skepticism, he quickly proved himself as one of the best guards in the NFL. In his rookie season, he even stepped in as an offensive tackle due to injuries and excelled, earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. The Cowboys have chosen to keep him at guard, even investing in Tyler Guyton from Oklahoma in 2024 instead of moving Smith back outside.
With changes in the offensive line—especially the retirement of stars like Tyron Smith and Zack Martin—Tyler Smith becomes a key figure. He’s now one of the only seasoned starters protecting Dak Prescott, a former NFL MVP runner-up.
In 2024, Smith allowed just 10 pressures, showcasing a pressure rate of only 3.5%. That performance ranks among the best for left guards over the past seven seasons, reinforcing his value to the team.
There’s no chance of free agency for Smith in 2026 or beyond; he’s clearly set to lead the offensive line for years to come. His journey is a telling example of how quickly talent can turn skepticism into respect in the NFL.
The Dallas Cowboys are counting on him to be a cornerstone as they aim for future success.
