Urbana-Champaign, Ill. – Indiana women’s soccer kicked off Big Ten play with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Illinois on Friday night. The standout duo of senior goalkeeper Dani Jacobson and graduate player Sally Rainey proved crucial, successfully shutting down Illinois’ strong offense for the first time this season.
Following the match, Indiana’s record stands at 3-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference games.
The game was intense from the start. Both teams struggled to find their feet offensively, leading to only six total shots in the first half. As the second half began, Illinois applied more pressure, yet Rainey came through with two impressive saves in the 57th minute, keeping the score level.
Senior forward Marisa Grzesiak also had her chances, creating two breakaways that unfortunately didn’t result in goals. In the final minutes, Illinois aimed for a last-minute score, but Rainey held strong against four shot attempts, ensuring the match ended in a draw.
This performance highlights the team’s resilience. Rainey’s efforts draw parallels to past goaltending legends in the league who have turned games around single-handedly. According to a recent survey from the NCAA, goalkeeper saves have greatly influenced match outcomes, showcasing how crucial a reliable goalie is to a team’s success.
Looking ahead, Indiana will travel to College Park, Maryland, to face off against the Terrapins on Thursday, September 18, at 7 p.m. Fans can keep up with the team through their social media channels on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
