CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Tensions are rising between Venezuela and the United States after a U.S. warship boarded a Venezuelan tuna boat in its waters. Nine fishermen were on board when this incident happened, which was reported by Venezuela’s foreign minister, Yván Gil.
The U.S. hasn’t yet responded to this situation. It comes on the heels of President Donald Trump ordering warships to the Caribbean to combat drug cartels, causing further strain in relations.
Gil described the boarding as “illegal and hostile,” stating that 18 armed personnel occupied the vessel for eight hours, restricting the fishermen’s activities and communication. Eventually, the boat was escorted back by the Venezuelan navy. Gil emphasized that the fishing boat had the necessary permits from Venezuela’s Ministry of Fisheries.
He shared videos reportedly taken by the fishermen, capturing moments from the incident. “Such provocations aim to escalate military tensions in the Caribbean,” Gil said, suggesting that the U.S. intends to continue its unsuccessful attempts at regime change in Venezuela.
This latest incident follows Trump’s claims about a U.S. operation that reportedly targeted a drug-laden vessel linked to the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua. Critics, including Venezuela’s interior minister, Diosdado Cabello, labeled the U.S. narrative as false, hinting that innocent individuals might be involved in the situation.
The U.S. has long accused President Nicolás Maduro of running a drug cartel contributing to the drug crisis in America. In fact, the reward for his capture was recently doubled to $50 million.
Despite the U.S. military build-up in the region, there’s no indication of a ground invasion. Still, Venezuela is encouraging citizens to join militias to support its armed forces. The government is actively organizing training sessions at military barracks, showcasing a commitment to defending its sovereignty.
The growing discord reflects a larger geopolitical conflict, echoing historical tensions of U.S. interventions in Latin America. As both sides exchange accusations, the potential for further misunderstandings remains high.
