EUGENE, Ore. — This Saturday, when the University of Oregon football team faces off against Oregon State, they will wear a special uniform honoring Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, and his lifelong support for the university. Knight’s story is deeply linked to Oregon’s identity, making this game more than just a rivalry.
The Ducks will showcase a striking look: matte marble helmets, anthracite jerseys, gold accents, and bright gold cleats. Designed by Van Horne Brands, the uniforms highlight Knight’s contributions and passion for UO athletics. “It embodies the spirit of Nike and Oregon together,” said Quinn Van Horne, the senior designer.
The design process took two years and included input from players and coaches. Earlier this year, they had the chance to present the uniforms to Knight himself, who was visibly moved. UO senior linebacker Bryce Boettcher expressed gratitude, saying, “We wouldn’t be the University of Oregon without his help.”
The uniform’s golden cleats and details were inspired by Knight’s book, “Shoe Dog,” which recounts the origins of Nike. The gloves, featuring a waffle print, nod to the waffle iron Bowerman used to create early sneaker prototypes.
One unique aspect is the asymmetrical helmet design. One side features the classic Duck wing, while the other bears Nike’s wing, representing victory. These elements reflect the partnership that elevated Oregon on the global stage.
Todd Van Horne, former Nike VP and now creative director at Van Horne Brands, shared his personal connection to the project. He emphasized how Knight and Bowerman shaped the lives of many, including his own family.
Two patches on the jersey tell even more of the story. One represents the handshake between Knight and Bowerman, symbolizing their trust and collaboration. The other showcases the university motto, “Mens Agitat Molem,” which translates to “minds move mountains.” This patch also features images of Mount Hood and Mount Fuji, signifying the blending of cultures and ideas.
The “Shoe Duck” project captures not just Knight’s legacy, but also the pride of the entire Oregon community. Although Knight has chosen to step back from the spotlight in recent years, this tribute serves to highlight his impact. Fans and players alike recognize that his influence extends beyond the field, touching lives across the state.
As UO prepares for the big game, the uniforms symbolize more than just team spirit—they represent a shared history rooted in trust, innovation, and a deep love for Oregon.
