Marlene Haberman, a cherished member of the Chabad community in Bel Air, California, died unexpectedly in a car accident. Her husband, Melvin “Frailech Melech” Haberman, is currently in critical condition.
Marlene was more than just a community member; she was a vibrant soul who brought joy and warmth to everyone she met. Known for her welcoming smile, she played a significant role in the Chabad community for over 30 years, under the leadership of Rabbi Chaim and Charna Mentz.
At age 50, she took the initiative to learn Hebrew, a testament to her dedication to her faith. Marlene would often begin her day with the cheerful sentiment, “Of course it’s a good day, Hashem woke me up and gave me another day.” Her love for Judaism was evident in her daily prayers and practices, including her devotion to Kashrus. She was meticulous in maintaining a kosher kitchen and often ensured products at grocery stores had the proper certification.
She was also passionate about Jewish education. Marlene was a supporter of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), attending yearly retreats and programs in Israel. Her unique touch? She painted “JLI” on her nails for each retreat, leaving a lasting impression on her peers.
Over the years, she forged strong connections with many Shluchim and held a special friendship with Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky OBM, often checking in on his well-being.
Marlene’s sudden passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of her friends and family, both in Bel Air and at Chabad of Rancho Mirage, where she often spent time. She is survived by her son Chopsi Haberman and granddaughter Arielle.
