New Delhi: The Indian Navy has just welcomed a new anti-submarine warfare ship named ‘Androth.’ This addition strengthens India’s maritime security, especially given China’s increased activities in the Indian Ocean.
‘Androth’ is the second ship in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWCs) built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. This delivery is a significant step towards India’s goal of self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
The name ‘Androth’ comes from an island in the Lakshadweep archipelago. It reflects India’s dedication to protecting its vast sea territories.
These indigenously designed ships are built to the standards of the Indian Register of Shipping. They enhance the Navy’s ability to detect submarines, monitor coastal areas, and lay mines. With a length of about 77 meters, they are the largest warships in the Indian Navy powered by a Diesel Engine and Waterjet system.
