Kutztown University Honors Dr. Robert Portada III with 2025 Wiesenberger Award for Excellence – BCTV Coverage

Dr. Robert Portada III has been honored with the 2025 Arthur and Isabel Wiesenberger Award for Excellence in Teaching at Kutztown University. This annual award recognizes outstanding teaching and dedication to students.

Portada has an impressive background in political science, focusing on global politics, including regions like Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His research has examined the role of private security companies in South Sudan, showcasing his commitment to understanding complex political issues.

Since taking on the role of chair for the Department of Philosophy and Government in 2023, Portada has worked to enhance both undergraduate and graduate programs. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a unique 4+1 program that allows students to finish their degree faster.

At KU, he teaches several courses that explore international relations and regional politics. Some of his key classes include Introduction to International Relations and Politics of Latin America.

Portada earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Notre Dame in 2008. His passion for teaching and research continues to inspire students and enrich the curriculum at KU.

Recent studies indicate a rising interest in political science among students, reflecting a growing awareness of global events. According to the American Political Science Association, enrollments in political science courses have increased by 12% since 2020.
