Abia State is taking an exciting step towards a greener future with a new tree-planting campaign. The state government wants to fight climate change while improving public health and promoting sustainable growth.
Okey Kanu, the State’s Commissioner for Information, shared the news during a press briefing in Umuahia. He described how planting trees can help reduce erosion, capture carbon, and enhance the local environment. Plus, it will make Abia more attractive to visitors and investors. Kanu emphasizes that this initiative isn’t just about the environment; it’s also about leaving a lasting legacy for the state.
On another note, Kanu urged residents to keep their drains clear to prevent flooding, especially given the recent alerts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is actively working in Aba and Umuahia to keep drainage systems functioning properly. Kanu reminded citizens not to dump waste in waterways.
Additionally, Abia will participate in World Cleanup Day on September 25. ASEPA is teaming up with various groups to ensure the event runs smoothly.
In terms of infrastructure, Kanu announced six new roads will soon be opened, bringing the total number of completed projects under Governor Alex Otti to 39. Some notable roads include the Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Akara–Ohafia Road and Port Harcourt Road. While there have been recent direct labor projects, six have been completed, including Obunamiri Drive and the Northern Approach to Muli Bridge. Despite heavy rains, 30 more roads are under contract, and progress continues.
On the health front, the recruitment of health workers is moving along well. Of the 2,035 applications received, 1,752 have been shortlisted, with 1,404 applicants completing their assessments. Interviews for the candidates are currently underway.
Kanu also highlighted the return of sanitary inspection services as part of the “Keep Abia Clean” initiative. So far, inspectors have visited 4,500 premises across 85 communities, focusing on promoting a clean environment without causing undue hardship to residents.
The state’s tree-planting initiative reflects a growing trend toward environmentally friendly policies. Many communities worldwide are recognizing the importance of green initiatives. Recent studies show that urban tree canopies can reduce city temperatures, improve air quality, and enhance mental well-being.
