A Black college student named Demartravion “Trey” Reed was found dead on the campus of Delta State University in Mississippi. Investigators have ruled out foul play, despite online speculation about a possible lynching.
Trey, 21, from Grenada, Mississippi, just started classes at the university a month before his death. His family described him as joyful and full of life. They want clarity on what happened.
On September 15, at 7:32 a.m., the Cleveland Police received a call about a body found hanging from a tree. The Bolivar County Coroner, Rudy Seals Jr., noted that Trey had no signs of assault or injuries, suggesting he hadn’t been harmed before his death. Seals stated that, “At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death.”
Local police chief Michael Peele echoed this, confirming there was no evidence of foul play. However, Trey’s attorney, Vanessa Jones, mentioned that the family still hasn’t seen the official report. They are frustrated and seek clear answers.
Trey’s relatives remember him attending church regularly and expressing dreams of becoming a truck driver. His uncle, Rev. Jerry L. Reed, emphasized the family’s desire for the truth.
As news spread online, the situation stirred concern and many questions. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump took to social media, emphasizing that Trey’s family deserves answers and has been retained to help investigate. He stated he would collaborate with civil rights organizations to ensure transparency.
Despite the coroner’s findings, local lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, are pushing for a federal investigation. Thompson stated, “We must leave no stone unturned,” highlighting Mississippi’s troubling history with racial violence.
Delta State University, which has around 2,700 students, saw protests and vigils on campus as a response to Trey’s death. The university temporarily canceled classes in honor of Trey.
As the investigation continues, multiple agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, are assisting. University President Dan Ennis expressed condolences to Trey’s family, but his attorney noted that the family mainly learned about developments through the media.
