Human-caused climate change has significantly increased the likelihood of heat waves in Canada. Recent analysis from Environment and Climate Change Canada shows that these waves are now 2 to 10 times more likely to happen compared to the late 19th century.
In summer 2025, Canada experienced its 11th warmest season since 1948. The highest temperatures were recorded in Atlantic Canada, with Nathan Gillett from Environment and Climate Change Canada stating that one heat event was at least ten times more likely due to human activity.
During July and August, data showed that 10 regions surpassed average temperature thresholds, with significant heat waves impacting areas like the Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec.
These changes aren’t just numbers; they have real-world impacts. Flooding, wildfires, and extreme weather are increasingly affecting Canadian communities, particularly in regions that previously faced little to no natural disasters. Their expectation is that higher temperatures will continue to lead to more severe weather, including droughts and wildfires, in various regions.
Anabela Bonada, director of climate science at the Intact Centre, stated that we’re experiencing a shift. Areas not accustomed to wildfires are now watching these events unfold. “It’s a never-say-never situation,” she noted, emphasizing that climate change is affecting everyone.
