Syracuse University students are about to dive into the world of professional media production. The Newhouse School of Public Communications has teamed up with Sony Electronics to enhance learning with top-notch tools and experiences.

This partnership brings Sony’s latest broadcast and cinema cameras to the university’s studios. Students will not only use these professional-grade tools but will also have access to Sony’s platform for managing media assets. Workshops and mentorship programs with Sony experts will provide valuable insights as well.

The initiative will touch various fields like broadcast journalism, film production, and visual communications, particularly in the Dick Clark Studios. This space is crucial for creating student-run content and live broadcasts for the ACC sports network. Hands-on training will help students learn industry-standard workflows, essential for their future careers.

Theresa Alesso, the president of Sony Imaging Products and Solutions Americas, expressed the partnership’s importance. She noted that the latest tools aid students in enhancing their skills.

“Students are redefining journalism and visual storytelling,” she added, emphasizing the collaborative commitment to enriching learning.

This isn’t Syracuse’s first partnership. Earlier this year, the university started a regional economic office to engage companies like Micron Technology for research and training. It reflects a growing trend where universities ally with industry leaders to elevate media arts. For instance, the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts integrated Sony equipment in 2022, and New York University recently launched a virtual production center for high-quality audio.

Such collaborations are becoming vital in preparing students for an ever-evolving job market. According to a recent report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers increasingly seek candidates with hands-on experience, making these partnerships a great advantage for students.
