Unveiling the America 250 Civics Coalition: An Empowering Partnership Between the U.S. Department of Education, AFPI, TPUSA, Hillsdale College, and 40+ Organizations!

The U.S. Department of Education has teamed up with several organizations to launch the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. This initiative aims to boost patriotism and improve civic education in schools ahead of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

On Constitution Day, this coalition was officially introduced, building on efforts from the Trump Administration to honor the nation’s founding principles. Led by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, the coalition aims to inspire students and educators to engage in discussions about liberty and citizenship.

McMahon emphasized the importance of civic education, stating, “A country cannot survive if its values are forgotten.” She believes this initiative will energize young Americans to become informed citizens.

Greg Sindelar, Interim President of the America First Policy Institute, echoed her sentiments, highlighting a collective effort to ensure future generations understand America’s core principles.

Additional voices from within the coalition, like Dr. Hutz H. Hertzberg from Turning Point Education, stressed the need for a values-based education. “We are honored to partner with organizations that care about reviving strong civics education,” he said.

Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, called for a renewed focus on foundational principles, celebrating historical leaders who upheld these values. “We will work together to learn those principles,” he remarked.

Katie Gorka, the coalition’s executive director, pointed out that restoring patriotism involves ensuring everyone knows our history and cherishes freedom. Co-chair Erika Donalds added that an informed citizenry is crucial for a free society, emphasizing the need for civic knowledge in education.

Over the next year, the coalition will roll out various programs, including speaker series and a nationwide tour to engage students on college campuses.

Interestingly, a recent survey showed that a significant majority of Americans believe civics education is essential for democracy. This highlights a growing concern about the current state of civic knowledge among young people. According to a 2022 report from the non-profit group Generation Citizen, only 24% of students felt they learned about civic engagement in school.
