Paramjit Singh’s Unjust Detention: A Family’s Struggle
Paramjit Singh, an Indian-American businessman from Fort Wayne, has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for nearly a month due to an old legal issue. This situation raises important questions about immigration policies and the treatment of long-term residents in the U.S.
Singh, who has lived in the U.S. for over 30 years and is a permanent resident, was detained at Chicago O’Hare Airport upon returning from India on July 30. Despite having U.S.-born children, Singh was taken into custody under circumstances that have left his family reeling.
His attorney, Luis Angeles, explains that the detention stems from a case dating back many years. Singh has a serious health issue—a brain tumor—and his condition worsened during his initial five days at the airport. He was only moved to the emergency room after his health deteriorated significantly, and shockingly, his family learned of this development only through a medical bill.
Singh spent another 20 days in a detention center in Indiana before being transferred to another facility in Kentucky. Angeles asserts that Singh has a strong case for immediate release and that current tactics used by ICE are unfair. “A judge has already granted a bond,” Angeles stated, indicating the legal system recognizes Singh’s right to be free while his case is reviewed.
Despite these challenges, Singh’s brother, Charanjit, is working diligently to secure the bond and has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security. The plan is to escalate the situation to a federal court if necessary.
This case highlights a troubling trend where many green card holders face detention over decades-old issues. According to a 2022 report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), thousands of individuals are held in similar situations, raising concerns about the fairness of the immigration system.
