The Michigan State football team faced its first loss of the season against No. 25 USC, falling 45-31 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Junior quarterback Aidan Chiles put on a solid performance, completing 12 of 21 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He also contributed on the ground, adding 31 rushing yards and a 4-yard touchdown.
Senior wide receiver Omari Kelly showcased his skills with six catches for 133 yards, including a standout 75-yard touchdown catch late in the game. Sophomore Makhi Frazier added depth to the run game with 61 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Defensively, senior safeties Nikai Martinez and Malik Spencer each recorded seven tackles, but the Spartans struggled to contain the Trojan offense.
USC started strong, kicking a 25-yard field goal on their opening drive. Michigan State answered quickly with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Chiles to Chrishon McCray. However, USC regained the lead with a touchdown drive, making it 10-7.
Despite some impressive defensive plays from MSU, USC’s offense remained relentless. A 93-yard touchdown drive put the Trojans up 17-7. MSU managed to narrow the gap with a field goal but went into halftime trailing 24-10 after USC scored again.
In the second half, the Spartans narrowed the score to 31-24, showing resilience with back-to-back touchdowns. A fumble recovery by Grady Kelly set up one of those touchdowns. But USC responded with a long touchdown drive, extending their lead to 38-24.
Chiles connected with Kelly for another touchdown late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide, ending the night at 45-31.
Looking ahead, Michigan State will take a break before heading to Nebraska on October 4. The team aims to bounce back and learn from this tough defeat.
Statistics are telling. In college football, the average scoring margin for losing teams is often around 17 points, but MSU managed to stay competitive. This game may refine their game strategy moving forward.
