CHICAGO – The debate between pass rush and coverage in football often feels endless. Let’s set the record straight: while stellar coverage might seem crucial, it’s a strong pass rush that truly elevates defensive performance.
Take the Cowboys, for example. Their pass rush was once formidable, but it’s currently lacking. This is the biggest issue facing the team right now. Sure, there are other concerns, but generating pressure on the quarterback is crucial.
Even if Caleb Williams was the top pick in the draft, the Cowboys made him look better than he is. The same goes for Russell Wilson, who showed a different side against the Cowboys recently. Yes, the secondary has had its struggles, but could it be that they’ve always faced challenges? Key players like Trevon Diggs and Malik Hooker have been on the team for a while. They didn’t suddenly forget how to play.
At the heart of the problem is the absence of Micah Parsons. Traded to the Packers just before the season, he hasn’t been replaced effectively. While the Cowboys gained two first-round picks from the trade, the immediate impact is missing. Kenny Clark, while strong, is not a pass-rusher.
Initially, many fans were disappointed with the trade. However, considering Micah’s situation and his demand for a new deal, it made sense. Although I still wish it had ended differently, it seems he needed to move on.
The Cowboys’ defense faced a challenge against Williams. Disrupting his rhythm could have been the key to success, but that pressure just didn’t come.
Now, the Cowboys didn’t expect any of their new pass-rushers to replicate Micah’s excellence right away. Interestingly, pass-rushers often develop over time. Dante Fowler, for instance, was expected to shine but hasn’t yet shown his potential.
It’s still early in the season, just three games in. However, the lack of a consistent pass rush is evident. The signing of Jadeveon Clowney was meant to bolster the defense, but concerns about his readiness loom large. If he can’t perform better than the current roster, that’s a significant red flag.
Beyond the pass rush, the Cowboys have other pressing issues. In their recent game:
- Turnovers were a disaster, with a 4-0 ratio. This is unacceptable and sets a negative tone for any game.
- The passing game failed to capitalize against a weakened Bears defense. Despite efforts, they couldn’t convert in the red zone.

- While statistically the run defense seems solid, teams are opting to pass against the Cowboys, leaving their tackling inconsistent.
- Coaching strategies also raised eyebrows. Mismanaged timeouts could have shifted the game’s momentum.
In a loss, all elements of the team come under scrutiny. Yet, without a thriving pass rush, the Cowboys face an uphill battle moving forward. As they head into their next game, the impact of Micah Parsons will be evident. The need for a strong pass rush has never been clearer.
