Empowering Futures: Graduation Speech for the Class of 2025 at American University of Madaba

Address by H.E. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa,
Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem

Graduation Ceremony of the Class of 2025, AUM
Cultural Palace – Amman

Good evening, everyone.

I’m here from Jerusalem, bringing greetings of love and solidarity. It’s a joy to share this special day with all of you. Today marks a significant achievement for our graduates and their families who have worked hard to reach this moment. Parents, rejoice! Your persistence and support have brought us to this day.

The American University of Madaba has become a beacon of cultural and educational excellence. Founded in 2009 by the Latin Patriarchate, the university has grown significantly. His Majesty King Abdullah II inaugurated it officially in 2013. We are now celebrating the 11th graduating class. Special thanks to Mr. Azzam Shweihat, President Mamoun Akroush, and everyone involved in the university’s growth and success.

Speaking of success, it’s worth noting that 95% of our graduates find employment shortly after finishing their studies. That’s quite impressive! This achievement reflects the university’s commitment to educational quality, making a real difference in the lives of graduates and their families.

Today, Jordan stands as a symbol of security and stability in the region, thanks in large part to the wise leadership of King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Hussein. Jordan’s diplomatic efforts are recognized globally, particularly in advocating for peace and justice. I recently visited Gaza and witnessed the devastation there. The education system has crumbled, and young minds are losing their chance for a better future. We pray for peace, for the rebuilding of schools, and support for the people of Gaza and all of Palestine.

Dear graduates, education is key to building a better world. You are the future. This year is particularly special as it marks the Jubilee of 2025. It is a time for hope and renewal. In five years, we will also celebrate the 2000th anniversary of Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River. You are the Jubilee class, the class of hope, here to facilitate change and contribute to Jordan’s growth.

As Pope Leo XIII said, “This is a time for dialogue and bridge-building.” We hope the university will continue fostering understanding among different cultures and faiths. Our institutions are dedicated to building connections and promoting harmony between communities.

Congratulations to the graduates, their families, and the entire AUM community. May your future be bright, and may your efforts benefit all citizens of our beloved Jordan.
