Essentia Health is making a substantial impact in the Fargo-Moorhead area, as highlighted in a new economic report. This report, created by Northspan, an economic development firm, outlines how Essentia contributes not just as a healthcare provider but also as a local economic powerhouse.
Dr. Stefanie Gefroh, Essentia’s West Market president, emphasized their commitment to both patient care and community development. “We’re proud to support the growth of the Fargo-Moorhead area by partnering with local schools and expanding our services,” she said.
The report showcases impressive statistics. Essentia generates over $1.4 billion in economic output and supports more than 4,000 jobs. Each job at Essentia creates nearly another job in the community, amplifying its employment impact.
Essentia also collaborates with local businesses from various sectors, boosting spending on housing, dining, and entertainment. With 1,654 full-time employees and support for an additional 2,409, Essentia is the third largest employer in Cass County and seventh in North Dakota, according to Job Service North Dakota.
Shannon Full, president of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber, noted, “Essentia Health is a cornerstone of our community. Their efforts to create jobs and invest in health make a real difference in our region.”
Beyond economic impact, Essentia engages in significant community initiatives. They partner with Clay County Public Health to tackle mental health issues and support childcare services in the area. Their collaboration with Minnesota State University Moorhead helps train future nurses, ensuring a steady supply of healthcare professionals.
In the last five years, Essentia has contributed over $4.1 million to 100 nonprofit organizations in the region. Sandi Piatz, CEO of United Way of Cass-Clay, praised their involvement, stating, “Essentia helps us address poverty by ensuring families have what they need to thrive, including food and housing.”
Recent investments, such as a $4.5 million expansion of its surgical wing, underline Essentia’s response to community needs. This expansion will enhance their surgical services to meet rising demand.
In broader terms, Essentia has a significant influence across North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. They support over 24,000 jobs and generate an astounding $7.69 billion annually in total economic impact. In 2024 alone, they plan to invest more than $1.5 million in local organizations focused on food security, mental health, and youth development.
As a not-for-profit healthcare provider, Essentia ensures that everyone receives care, regardless of their financial situation. In 2021, it provided $490 million in charity and uncompensated care, addressing the essential needs of uninsured patients. Nationally, hospitals have contributed $22.5 billion in such care.
Essentia Health stands out not only as a healthcare leader but as a vital contributor to the economic and social fabric of the Fargo-Moorhead community.
