UC San Diego is making waves in the rankings for colleges catering to veterans. It jumped from No. 15 in 2023 to No. 11 in the latest list for 2026. For public universities, it’s now sitting at No. 6 nationwide for supporting veterans and active-duty service members seeking a college education.
Nat Kapp, who manages the Student Veterans Resource Center, said it’s great to see this recognition. “We’re dedicated to helping military-connected students make the most of their education here. This spotlight shows our commitment to breaking down barriers and building a supportive community,” Kapp explained.
John Sigafoos, a crew chief in the Marine Corps Reserve, is one of the many students benefiting from this supportive environment. Drawn to aerospace engineering, he studies at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Not only has he deepened his understanding of the aircraft he works on, but he’s also gained hands-on experience as part of the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) group. His time at the Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC) has helped him feel connected while balancing his military service, studies, and family life.
On the academic front, UC San Diego also saw its undergraduate programs soar. The computer science program rose to No. 12, while engineering climbed to No. 17. Among public universities, computer science held the No. 6 position, and engineering ranked No. 10. Notably, some specific disciplines shone brightly: biocomputing and bioinformatics claimed the No. 2 spot, while cybersecurity and biomedical programs were ranked 7th.
Recent surveys indicate that more veterans are choosing to pursue higher education, which directly ties back to support services like those at UC San Diego. An August 2022 report showed that nearly 50% of veterans prioritize schools with strong support systems when selecting their educational paths. As the demand for skilled workers grows, universities focusing on veterans will likely continue to excel.

They not only provide academic resources but also foster a sense of community essential for success.
