The University of Texas is once again hitting new records as it starts the 2025 academic year. This fall, 55,000 students have enrolled, marking a 7.5% increase in first-time college students, with 9,900 freshmen joining.
Undergraduate enrollment is now at 44,314, with a notable jump in applications—90,690—up nearly 25% from last year and over 50% since 2022. The first-year retention rate stands at an impressive 97.1%, far above the national average of about 77%. Furthermore, 15,963 degrees were awarded last year, setting a new record for the university.
UT President Jim Davis shared his pride in these achievements. He emphasized the university’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards even as enrollment grows.
Why Are More Students Choosing UT?
One of the main reasons for this influx is affordability. According to U.S. News & World Report, UT ranks as the 30th best college nationwide and the top public university in Texas. Full-time undergraduates paid just $3,852 this academic year, significantly lower than the national average of $11,823. New initiatives, like the Promise Plus program, are also helping. This year, 12,200 students are attending tuition-free, a rise from the previous year.
Additionally, over 22% of undergraduate students are first-generation college students, reflecting a shift toward wider access to higher education.
Class Composition
About 80.5% of the enrolled students are from Texas. However, international student numbers have decreased slightly, influenced by recent national policies. In 2024, over 1,900 undergraduate and 4,600 graduate students came from various countries, predominantly India, China, and South Korea. The representation of Asian and Hispanic students has risen.
Looking Ahead
For the next academic year, UT plans to adjust its admission criteria to include the top 5% of Texas high school graduates. Miguel Wasielewski, a senior vice provost, stresses the importance of balancing growth with maintaining a quality student experience. He noted that faculty-student ratios and course offerings are crucial to ensuring each student has a valuable educational experience.
