University of Oklahoma’s Mateer Scheduled for Surgery This Wednesday: What You Need to Know

University of Oklahoma’s head football coach, Brent Venables, shared some tough news this week. Quarterback John Mateer will have surgery on his right hand after a recent injury during a game against Auburn. Venables stated that this choice, made after consulting medical experts, is the best path for Mateer’s current and future health.

While it’s disappointing for Mateer to miss some games, he is ready to tackle rehab and return to play as soon as possible. “We know he will give it his all to get back on the field,” said Venables.

Mateer got hurt in the first quarter of the Sooners’ 24-17 win over Auburn. Remarkably, he played through the injury, ending the game with 271 passing yards and 29 rushing yards. He even led the game-winning touchdown drive, scoring with just under five minutes left on the clock.

With Mateer sidelined, sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will lead the team in the next game against Kent State on October 4. “We trust Michael completely. He showed his potential last season and has only improved since then,” remarked Venables, expressing excitement about this new chance for Hawkins.

So far this season, the Sooners are off to a strong start with a record of 4-0 and are ranked 7th in the AP Poll. Mateer has been impressive, averaging 351.3 yards of total offense per game, putting him second in the nation. He has consistently scored at least one touchdown through both rushing and passing in his last ten games, a streak tied for third longest since 2000, alongside football great Lamar Jackson.

As fans turn their attention to Hawkins, many are taking to social media to share their encouragement and support. The buzz around the Sooners’ promising season continues to grow, showcasing the excitement around college football. With Mateer’s recovery underway, the team remains poised for success, eager to see what lies ahead in the coming games.
