Massive Explosion Rocks Springwater Cart Park: 8 Food Carts Damaged in Southeast Portland

Portland Fire is looking into a morning explosion at a popular food cart spot in Southeast Portland. Crews rushed to the Springwater Cart Park around 4:40 a.m. They found that at least eight carts and two nearby structures were damaged. Some of these may be completely lost.

According to Rick Graves from Portland Fire, the cause was an accidental explosion linked to a propane leak in one of the food carts. Residents nearby reported hearing the blast from their homes. Thankfully, no one was injured.

Business owner Michelle Rademacher, who runs The Crystal Guide, is heartbroken over the destruction. Her store features items from about 130 local artists, and much of that inventory is now ruined. “It’s devastating,” she said. “But I’m just thankful no one was here when it happened. It could have been so much worse.”

In a time when many small businesses are struggling due to economic hardships, incidents like this are particularly tough. According to a recent survey by the National Small Business Association, about 75% of small businesses report challenges from rising costs.

Rademacher has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the recovery. While financial support is crucial, the community of Portland has a history of rallying around local businesses in times of crisis. This situation has sparked discussions online, with many voicing their support for affected merchants.
