Xiaomi has launched its new flagship series, the Xiaomi 17, and it’s already stirring conversations about its similarities with Apple. Critics argue that Xiaomi seems to be closely mirroring Apple’s style, while fans feel it’s a strategic move to compete directly in the premium market. The standout feature? A unique second screen on the back of the Pro models that adds flair and functionality.
Unlike other Chinese brands that often skip numbers (for instance, OnePlus’s leap from 13 to 15), Xiaomi is boldly moving from the 15 to the 17 series. This choice is no accident; Xiaomi aims to align its product lineup closely with Apple’s numbering scheme, a move that CEO Lei Jun made clear during the Beijing launch event.
The lineup includes the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, echoing Apple’s naming. During his presentation, Jun frequently contrasted the Xiaomi 17 with the latest iPhones, highlighting advantages in battery life, performance, and photography.
Looking at the hardware, while it may seem like Xiaomi is taking cues from Apple, the specs speak for themselves. The Pro and Pro Max versions boast impressive features. Their back display lets users control music, use widgets, and even act as a viewfinder for selfies—making it a practical innovation compared to earlier attempts by other brands in this space.
Xiaomi has also introduced a fun Game Boy-inspired case, adding an entertaining twist to the product lineup. Not only does this make the phone more appealing, but it also opens up gaming possibilities for users.
Both Pro models are powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and feature substantial batteries (6,300mAh for the Pro and 7,500mAh for the Pro Max). They support fast 100W wired and 50W wireless charging, making them robust contenders in the smartphone market.
Camera technology remains a key focus, with each model sporting three 50-megapixel cameras. The Pro Max has a improved telephoto lens for better low-light photography.
As for pricing, the Xiaomi 17 starts at ¥4,499 (about $630), while the Pro and Pro Max are priced at ¥4,999 ($700) and ¥5,999 ($840) respectively. These models are available for preorder now, with a full release set for September 27.
Given that Xiaomi plans to release these devices globally, eager fans might need to wait until spring for availability in Europe, coinciding with the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show.
