This phenomenon involves two storms merging or rotating around a common center. It’s described by the National Weather Service as an “intense dance” between storms when they get near each other.

The specifics of this interaction depend on the strength and size of each storm. Nolan explains that typically, if one storm is stronger, it will overpower the other. In rare cases, though, a larger system can absorb a smaller one, leading to potential strengthening.

Humberto intensified into a tropical storm on Wednesday and is expected to move northwest while gaining strength. According to the National Hurricane Center, it could affect coastal areas from Florida to North Carolina.

Meanwhile, there’s another system brewing near Humberto, which is likely to become Tropical Storm Imelda over the weekend. This storm could also strengthen as it approaches the Bahamas, increasing the risks of strong winds and rainfall for southeastern U.S. coastlines.

Nolan warns that while both systems are being monitored, if they were to interact, it may not have dramatic effects due to the weaker nature of the incoming storm compared to Humberto. However, any interaction could slightly alter their expected paths.

As of Thursday morning, the National Hurricane Center reported that Humberto was about 465 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands, boasting maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Experts will continue to watch both systems closely in the coming days.
