BSNL’s Indigenous 4G Network: A Leap Towards Digital Empowerment in India
On a recent day in Jaipur, Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma celebrated a proud moment for India: the launch of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) fully indigenous 4G network. This event is not just another tech milestone; it symbolizes innovation and self-reliance in the telecom sector.
The Prime Minister inaugurated 92,633 BSNL 4G towers nationwide, with 5,655 towers added in Rajasthan alone. “This is a huge leap for our country,” Sharma remarked. He highlighted that all components of the 4G network are developed by Indian institutions, placing India among just five countries that have created their own 4G technology.
Since 2014, the Indian telecom landscape has transformed dramatically. Internet accessibility has surged, bridging gaps across urban and rural areas. During the launch, Sharma noted that BSNL was founded during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership to modernize communications in India.
Under the Digital India initiative, BSNL is taking steps to connect 27,106 villages with 4G. They’ve already installed 18,903 solar-powered towers, benefiting nearly 2 million households. Sharma articulated a vision where every Indian can access information effortlessly, stating, “When a farmer checks market prices online or a student attends classes remotely, that’s true empowerment.”
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, added that this launch aligns with the broader Seva Pakhwada (service fortnight) celebrating the Prime Minister’s 75th birthday. He emphasized that the indigenous technology will not only serve urban communities but also strengthen connectivity in border areas.
This shift supports India’s Make-in-India campaign, which aims to boost local manufacturing and technological sovereignty. Vikram Malviya, BSNL’s chief general manager in Rajasthan, expressed gratitude for the government’s support in realizing the Digital India goals.
To understand the impact of these developments, consider recent statistics: a report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India indicates a steady growth in internet subscriptions in rural areas, climbing from 1.2% in 2014 to over 45% in 2023.
