Second Harvest of Central Florida Food Bank recently took on an exciting challenge: a 24-hour food packing marathon called “Hunger Never Sleeps.” This unique event aimed to tackle hunger in the community, and it broke new ground for the organization.
More than 300 dedicated volunteers signed up for three-hour shifts. Their goal? To pack 100,000 meals. They ended up creating an impressive 126,000 meals! This success showcases the community’s commitment to fighting hunger.
Alfred Delio, a long-time volunteer, expressed his passion for helping. “I started volunteering here in 2016. It makes me feel good inside. I feel like I’ve accomplished something,” he shared while stacking boxes in the early hours. His sentiments reflect a common reason many choose to volunteer: the satisfaction of making a difference.
Derrick Chubbs, the President and CEO of Second Harvest, highlighted a critical issue. “1 in 7 Central Floridians do not know where their next meal is coming from, and 1 in 6 of those are children,” he pointed out. This stark statistic emphasizes the urgent need for support in the area.
The significance of this round-the-clock effort cannot be understated. Chubbs noted, “In 43 years of our food bank’s history, we’ve never been open overnight.” The community’s response to this initiative shows how seriously they take the fight against hunger.
As the event wrapped up, Delio acknowledged the challenge of lack of sleep. However, he believed that the long hours spent volunteering were worth every moment. “It’s amazing to be part of something that positively impacts so many lives,” he said.
Events like this not only meet current needs but also inspire hope. The 126,000 meals packed will be distributed to families throughout Central Florida, reminding us that collective effort can yield powerful results in the fight against food insecurity.
