At least four people have lost their lives due to severe flooding in Arizona. The heavy rains have created a dangerous situation, particularly in Globe, a small town about 88 miles east of Phoenix. Emergency Manager Carl Melford reported that three victims were found in a vehicle or in the floodwaters in Globe, where the city is grappling with a growing crisis.
In suburban Phoenix, another victim was discovered near a car caught in floodwaters. The dangerous conditions led to the car becoming partially submerged, and rescue teams found the victim trapped underneath a walkway after the water receded.
In Globe, authorities are conducting a massive search and rescue operation. Melford mentioned reports of possible missing persons but did not clarify the exact numbers. The local sheriff’s office is actively working to locate anyone who may still be unaccounted for.
The flooding is particularly alarming considering that the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport recorded its highest rainfall in nearly seven years on the same day. This rainfall contributed to one of the city’s wettest days since 2000, overwhelming the community and causing rapid flooding.
Among the worst-hit areas was a propane tank distribution site. About 1,000 propane tanks were swept into the downtown area. Fortunately, there were no explosions, but hazardous materials teams were deployed to manage the situation.
Melford emphasized that this flooding was unprecedented, recalling a similar incident in 2021 after a wildfire, but this amount of rainfall was extreme. This year, the rains fell in a very short window, leading to rapid accumulation and flooding.
Local officials urge residents to avoid venturing into floodwaters, as it can interfere with search efforts. They recommend helping friends and neighbors instead. In response to the crisis, the Globe City Council has declared a state of emergency. Mayor Al Gamero noted that many people have offered to assist, and community buildings have suffered significant damage.
