Reviving Tradition: A Century-Old American Hat Company Experiences Booming Demand Amidst the Western Lifestyle Resurgence

American Hat Company, based in Bowie, Texas, has seen a surge in popularity since the TV show “Yellowstone” premiered in 2018. Founded in 1915, the company specializes in handmade cowboy hats, crafted from straw and felt. Business has been booming so much that they’re currently facing a multi-year backlog on orders.

Company president, Keith Mundee, shared that the rise in demand reflects a growing interest in the Western lifestyle. He noted that customers are seeking something authentically American, which their hats represent. Mundee explained, “People were clamoring for something that was truly American or kind of going back to their roots.”

Creating these hats is no small feat. The process includes about 18 meticulous steps to transform raw materials into finished products. Most of the hats sold are primarily made in the U.S., aligning with customers’ preferences for quality craftsmanship.

Interestingly, American Hat Company’s most popular hat, the 40X, combines beaver and hare fur and comes in various colors. However, their flagship hat, the 1,000X, features a luxurious blend of beaver underfur and mink, with prices reaching around $4,800. Mundee describes selling these hats as more than just business; it’s about embodying the spirit of the American West.

Recent trends show that consumers are increasingly interested in quality, local products as the “buy local” movement continues to grow. A survey by the American Farm Bureau found that nearly 70% of consumers prefer supporting local businesses. This shift is resonating across various markets, including handmade products like those from American Hat Company.

Moreover, the company’s mission goes beyond selling hats. Mundee emphasizes patriotism and honoring the military in their work. Each hat features an American flag, serving as a reminder of the values they uphold. He stated, “I’m really not selling cowboy hats as much as I’m selling the national anthem, the opening prayer, respect for our military.”

In an age where fast fashion dominates, American Hat Company stands out by focusing on tradition and craftsmanship. Their success highlights a nostalgic connection to American culture and a growing desire for quality over quantity. This resonates especially well with young consumers eager to connect with history and authenticity.
