Columbia Men’s Soccer Draws with Penn in Ivy League Opener
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the Columbia men’s soccer team played to a thrilling 2-2 draw against Penn at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. This was an exciting start to the Ivy League season for both teams.
Columbia struck first in the 13th minute. Jack McDaid found the net for his third goal this season, thanks to a beautiful setup from his brother, Joe. Joe launched a long pass that reached Henning Myrvang in the box. Myrvang tapped it back, allowing Jack to blast a shot into the left side of the goal.
The early lead changed the game’s momentum. Before this goal, Penn had controlled most of the action in Columbia’s half. Just eight minutes later, Penn leveled the score. George Herbert sent a perfectly timed ball that Patrick Cayelli skillfully chipped over Columbia’s goalkeeper, Dean Kelliher, making it 1-1.
As the first half continued, Penn threatened to take the lead, hitting the crossbar twice—once from Marco Bottene and again from Jack Wagoner. Despite Penn outshooting Columbia 10-5 in the first half, only four of the shots were on target.
The Quakers made their mark early in the second half, scoring just five minutes in. After a shot from Connor Dawson rebounded off the post, Wagoner was quick to head it in, putting Penn ahead 2-1.
However, Columbia wasn’t ready to give up. In the 70th minute, first-year player Connor Owen made a smart pass to Andres Garcia, who let it go right through to Alessandro Franciosa. Franciosa unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, leveling the score at 2-2.
Columbia kept pushing for a winner in the closing minutes but couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.
The Lions now shift their focus to their next match against Yale, who hasn’t won yet this season with a record of 0-6-2. This game is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
