ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Chicago volleyball team delivered an exhilarating performance, clinching a narrow 3-2 victory over No. 5 WashU on the final day of the UAA Round Robin. The match, filled with dramatic moments, ended with scores of 18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, and 15-12.
From the start, WashU set the pace in the opening set, using powerful attacks to gain an early edge. Their precise serving initially put UChicago on the defensive. However, the Maroons found their footing in the second set. Senior Diya Mishra fired off several kills and aces, helping UChicago rally back. A key kill by outside hitter Olivia Zamis and a service ace from setter Hillary Cheung secured the set and brought the momentum back to the Maroons.
In the third set, UChicago showcased both offensive firepower and solid defense. Mishra continued her strong performance, and Adelee Kaiton chipped in with important kills. Their defense forced WashU into errors and stifled their scoring. The Maroons dominated the set, winning 25-18 and proving they were determined to compete.
WashU, however, wasn’t done yet. They fought back in the fourth set with a blend of strong serves and quick attacks, claiming the set 25-19 and pushing the match into a decisive fifth set.
The final set was tense, with both teams trading points intensely. After a series of long rallies, a crucial block by Cheung along with another vital kill from Mishra gave UChicago the edge they needed. Despite WashU’s best efforts to stay in the game, the Maroons clinched the set 15-12, achieving a hard-earned victory.
Mishra shone brightly, leading the team with 21 kills, five aces, and 19 digs. Zamis contributed 12 kills and four blocks, while Cheung tallied 32 assists along with a pivotal block in the final moments. This win left UChicago with a strong 2-1 record for the weekend.
