Free Community Health Resource Fair Returns to Metropolis, Illinois
The Community Health Resource Fair is back in Metropolis for its third year, and it promises to be bigger and better! Join us at Dorothy Miller Park this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., right next to Harrah’s Casino. The day starts with an opening ceremony at the Metropolis Lighthouse at 9:30 a.m.
Families can explore many booths from local health providers and businesses. There will be free health screenings for blood pressure and colon cancer. Plus, you can pick up valuable information about cancer resources, insurance options, and other health topics.
A special highlight of the fair will be free car seat checks provided by The Little Resource Center from Carbondale.
Activities for kids will include bouncy houses and emergency vehicle tours, along with a fun six-foot-long “Operation” game. There will also be door prizes, and the first 100 attendees will get a coupon for a free lunch!
Shawnna Rhine from Southern 7 Health Department emphasizes the importance of this event. She points out that many families in the area have to travel long distances—sometimes over 50 miles—for basic health care. “This fair helps bridge that gap by introducing local healthcare providers to the community,” Rhine explains.
Originally started as the Cancer Warriors Walk for Hope, the fair has grown into a comprehensive health event suitable for all ages. Chase Hileman from Rural Health, Inc. notes that many people are often unaware of healthcare resources available to them. “This is a great opportunity for families to learn about local health services while having fun,” he said.
Local community engagement is essential for promoting health awareness. According to a recent survey by the National Health Institute, nearly 60% of families feel disconnected from health services in their area. Events like this fair can make a real difference, creating connections and improving access to care.
