A woman named Nakia Porter recently settled a lawsuit with Solano County for $17 million. This was after a troubling incident in 2020 when she was injured and arrested by sheriff’s deputies in Northern California during a family trip.
The events took place on August 6, 2020. Porter was driving home with her father and three small children when they stopped to switch drivers. While she was outside the car, deputies arrived, lights flashing. Despite explaining the situation, they reacted violently. Body camera footage shows deputies pulling their guns and forcefully slamming Porter to the ground. They also handcuffed her father.
Porter spent the night in jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, though no charges were ever filed against her. She accused the deputies of violating her civil rights and using excessive force. In addition to the physical harm, Porter claimed they inaccurately documented the incident in their reports.
Her lawyer, Yasin Almadani, stated that what happened to Porter and her family shouldn’t occur in our society. Public reactions echoed these sentiments, with many on social media expressing outrage about the treatment of Porter and raising concerns about police conduct, particularly towards Black individuals.
