The Nigerian government has launched a significant project aimed at tackling erosion and flooding, which are major issues affecting the country. The initiative, known as the European Investment Bank (EIB) Assisted Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), was officially introduced in Abuja by Environment Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal.
The EIB has committed €175 million to this five-year project, which will impact 23 states, including Borno, Delta, and Ogun. This funding will assist in essential preparatory steps, like setting up offices and purchasing equipment. The Federal Government has already contributed ₦750 million as an initial amount, with states also providing their shares to ensure the project’s success.
The launch marks an evolution of previous efforts, starting with the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP-IDA) in 2010, which focused on soil health and controlling erosion across seven states. This earlier project expanded over time and concluded in 2022. The new initiative aims to build on those achievements, emphasizing the importance of adaptive strategies to combat climate change.
Lawal warned that Nigeria is increasingly vulnerable to climate-related disasters, with issues like gully erosion and flooding causing extensive damage and loss of life. He underscored that collaborative efforts are essential, urging state governors to step up their financial commitments. Meanwhile, Mahmud Adam Kambari, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, called the partnership a transformative effort emphasizing global cooperation.
Innovative strategies are vital in this area, especially as recent statistics show that extreme weather events are on the rise. According to the World Meteorological Organization, the number of climate-related disasters has increased more than fivefold since the 1970s. This trend underlines the urgency of projects like NEWMAP-EIB.
Engr. Anda Ayuba Yalaks, the National Project Coordinator, shared that this project focuses on enhancing land management and community resilience. With a structured team overseeing its implementation, the project is designed to adapt to the evolving challenges of climate change.
