Southern Illinois Women’s Golf wrapped up their time at the Diane Thomason Invite in Iowa City on September 30. New Head Coach Samantha Sambursky’s squad faced some tough challenges but took away valuable lessons.
In the first round, the players struggled to find their rhythm. Sambursky emphasized that this experience was crucial for the growth of her team. “We had a shaky start, but each tournament helps us improve,” she explained. Some players have become regular participants, gaining much-needed competition experience.
One area Sambursky highlighted for improvement was their short game. “We really need to focus on our shots from 100 yards and in,” she noted. Inconsistent play with wedges and putting cost them valuable strokes.
The team showed noticeable growth in the second and third rounds, a trend that caught Sambursky’s attention. “We got better with every round and played the best I’ve seen this season,” she said, noting the potential this team has moving forward.
