Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois Expands Medicare Advantage Plans in 2026

Mark your calendars: Medicare’s enrollment period starts October 15.

CHICAGO — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) is excited to offer Medicare Advantage (MA) plans in nearly all of Illinois—100 out of 102 counties! This is a great chance for Medicare beneficiaries to choose or change their health plans. The enrollment period runs from October 15 to December 7, with coverage starting January 1, 2026.

Why do so many people opt for MA plans? They provide extra benefits beyond standard Medicare. That often includes vision, hearing, and some dental services. Many plans also feature:

  • Health product allowances for over-the-counter items.
  • Fitness programs designed for seniors, like SilverSneakers®.

Some of BCBSIL’s MA plans come with a $0 premium, while others might even give money back in Social Security checks. Benefits and costs can differ based on the plan and location.

BCBSIL boasts a large network with around 19,000 primary care doctors and 62,000 specialists throughout the state, plus about 1,900 hospitals and healthcare facilities. This extensive network ensures you have access to quality care close to home.

Alongside MA plans, BCBSIL also offers Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans and standalone Blue Cross MedicareRx (PDP)℠ for prescription drugs. Supplement plans cover extra costs not included in Original Medicare, usually paired with a PDP for prescriptions. Some plans even include dental and vision coverage.

Brian Snell, president of BCBSIL, emphasized, “We’re dedicated to providing a wide range of options that fit various needs and budgets. Our members have relied on us for nearly nine decades.”

As the healthcare landscape shifts, data highlights the growing importance of supplemental coverage. According to recent studies, about 40% of Medicare beneficiaries now opt for MA plans, a significant increase over the past decade. This trend reflects changing preferences in healthcare, with many seeking more comprehensive coverage.

For those looking for answers or guidance, BCBSIL hosts educational sessions to help individuals understand their options better. You can check for upcoming opportunities on their events page.
