Celebrate Croqueta Day in Miami: Savor the Flavors of the ‘305’!

There’s something irresistibly crunchy about Miami’s favorite snack: croquetas. These delicious fried fritters, often filled with ham, are a key part of Cuban cuisine and a go-to treat for Miami locals from all walks of life.

Today is especially exciting for croqueta fans—it’s Croqueta Day in South Florida! This local holiday was initiated by Sergio’s restaurants a few years back, and by 2021, both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties officially recognized October 1 as honorary Croqueta Day.

So, what’s the best way to celebrate? Grab a croqueta (or three!) and enjoy it with a café con leche for the ultimate Miami snack experience. Many local spots make for perfect croqueta stops, like Vicky Bakery, Bustelo, Sergio’s, and even the ventanita at the Barnes and Noble Café. You really can’t go wrong!

What is it about croquetas that keeps people coming back? Samantha Ruiz, a public relations student, shares her thoughts: “It’s definitely one of my favorite snacks. I love the crispy texture and the taste of ham. Plus, they’re the perfect size for a quick bite!”

Ivan Lopez, a theatre professor, has a deeper connection to croquetas. “My grandfather owned a butcher shop in Cuba, and I grew up watching him make croquetas from scratch. It’s a way to remember him,” he says. He appreciates that at FIU, you can find croquetas in multiple spots within just a short walk.

Students each have their favorite spots. For Lopez, it’s Vicky Bakery, while others swear by Sergio’s for lunch. Biology major Sophia Nuñez is a Bustelo devotee, often pairing her ham croqueta with hot chocolate. “That combo just hits differently,” she says.

Croquetas aren’t just tasty; they’re a part of Miami’s culture. They represent community, nostalgia, and the joy of sharing a meal with friends. Recent surveys have shown that over 75% of Miamians enjoy eating croquetas, highlighting their popularity today. Whether you prefer them with a café con leche or simply on their own, croquetas are a beloved staple that captures the spirit of Miami.

So, here’s to croquetas—may they always be a tasty reason to gather and celebrate in the Magic City!
