Microsoft is unveiling a fresh look for its Office icons, marking a big change from the last update in 2018. The new icons are vibrant and playful, aligning with Microsoft’s recent design efforts.
All ten core Office apps are getting a makeover, inspired by Microsoft’s Copilot icon. Jon Friedman, vice president of design and research for Microsoft 365, notes that these new icons reflect themes of connection and collaboration. They aim to be simple, intuitive, and accessible.
One striking change is the use of richer colors. Where the previous icons had subtle gradients, the new designs feature bold transitions that enhance contrast. “We’re moving toward a more fluid and playful feel,” says Friedman.
The icons have been simplified for better clarity, especially at smaller sizes. For instance, the Word icon dropped from four bars to three, making it easier to read. Friedman explains, “We’ve shifted from rigid shapes to softer, flowing designs, enhancing their approachability.”
This redesign is part of a broader trend in tech. Many companies, such as Google, are opting for softer, more colorful aesthetics to appeal to users. Research shows that such designs are not just eye-catching; they can also foster a sense of connection and creativity among users.
