HONOLULU — The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has issued a warning about a recall of Sea Port Products Corp’s Raw Frozen Easy Peel White Shrimp (Jumbo size 16/20). This recall is due to possible contamination with Cesium-137. Notably, this is the second such recall of frozen shrimp in just two weeks.
The cesium isotope was detected in a single shipment that never reached U.S. markets, but the recall covers shrimp from the same processing source due to unsanitary conditions. Fortunately, no contaminated products have entered local stores yet.
A limited amount of the affected shrimp, packaged in 1- and 2-pound bags, was sent to some stores in Hawai‘i. The DOH is working with these stores to ensure the recalled shrimp is removed from sale. Consumers should check if they purchased these products by looking for brand details, item descriptions, UPC codes, and best-by dates on their packages. If you have the recalled shrimp, do not eat it. Instead, dispose of it or return it for a refund.
Cesium-137 is a manmade isotope. While it’s found in small amounts in the environment, higher levels can occur in contaminated food and water. Long-term exposure to elevated levels may increase cancer risk, according to health experts. The FDA has conducted studies showing that although trace amounts exist broadly, serious contamination cases are rare.
As of now, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the shrimp recall. Consumers with questions can reach Sea Port Products Corp. at 425-896-0186 during business hours.
This situation underlines the importance of monitoring seafood quality. In recent years, recalls due to contamination have increased significantly, prompting calls for stricter regulations in food safety. A survey revealed that 71% of consumers are concerned about contaminants in seafood, showing the need for transparency from producers.
