SK Hynix Soars to 25-Year High While Samsung Rallies: What OpenAI Partnerships Mean for Chipmakers

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, two giants in the chip industry, saw their stock prices soar recently after teaming up with OpenAI for a new initiative named Stargate. Samsung’s shares jumped over 4%, reaching their highest level since January 2021. SK Hynix experienced an even larger increase, with a remarkable 9% rise, marking its best performance since 2000.

This partnership aims to boost the production of advanced memory chips, which are essential for the next generation of artificial intelligence. OpenAI noted that these chips would enhance data center capabilities in South Korea—a key hub for technology.

The collaboration came during a meeting between OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. They discussed developing AI data centers, which includes working with South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and telecom operator SK Telecom.

In a related move, SK Hynix recently announced its readiness to mass-produce high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. These chips are critical for AI computing, especially for companies like Nvidia that are significant clients for SK Hynix. HBM chips are expected to play a pivotal role in Nvidia’s upcoming AI architecture, which aims to enhance data processing for global data centers.

Samsung, once the leader in memory chips, now faces tough competition. A recent report from Counterpoint Research highlighted that SK Hynix had nearly matched Samsung’s memory revenue in the last quarter, challenging the established order in the market. Despite a significant drop in Samsung’s chip profits—down almost 94% year-on-year—its CFO expressed optimism for a recovery in the latter half of the year.

Expert opinions reflect a growing tension in the tech landscape. The AI sector is rapidly evolving, and companies that can provide the necessary hardware will likely dominate the market. As demand increases, the partnership between Samsung, SK Hynix, and OpenAI could reshape the future of AI technology.
