The Citizens Free Service Forum (CFSF) recently held a workshop aimed at empowering journalists to better report on environmental issues and climate change. This event took place in Abuja, on October 1, 2025, and was a joint effort with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
Sani Baba, the Executive Director of CFSF, emphasized that media plays a crucial role in raising public awareness about the dangers of climate change. According to a recent report from the World Economic Forum, over 70% of people feel that news about climate change is vital for understanding its effects on daily life. Yet, many journalists lack the tools and knowledge to cover these topics effectively.
The workshop provided journalists with insights into how climate change affects growth. Baba noted that even though Nigeria has committed to education and training objectives outlined in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, much work remains to be done. He mentioned, “Many voices that need to be heard are missing. It’s crucial for the media to highlight this gap.”
Participants engaged in various sessions, including presentations on the evolution of climate justice and effective storytelling techniques. Mr. Echezona Asuzu led a session titled “The Science of Climate Change and the Evolution of the Struggle for Just Transition,” offering valuable data and historical context about climate activism.
Experts believe that enhancing journalistic skills can create a more informed public. A recent survey highlighted that 63% of people trust news reports to give them accurate information about climate issues, making it essential for journalists to be equipped with the right knowledge.
The event also covered practical aspects, including how to interpret global politics related to climate justice. As Mr. Elijah Iklaga pointed out, “Connecting global issues to local realities can empower citizens to take action.”
As our world becomes increasingly impacted by climate change, the media’s role in educating the public cannot be overstated. Workshops like this one are steps forward in fostering a community that understands the urgency of climate action.
