INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The Los Angeles Rams lost a close game to the San Francisco 49ers, 26-23, in overtime Thursday night at SoFi Stadium.
In the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 20. The Rams defense stood strong and stopped the 49ers, forcing them to go three-and-out. But the Rams couldn’t capitalize and went three-and-out themselves.
Punter Ethan Evans kicked it deep, pinning the 49ers at their own 2-yard line. Even so, San Francisco managed to convert a 59-yard field goal, taking the lead 23-20 with just under three minutes remaining.
The Rams quickly moved the ball down the field, reaching the 49ers’ 3-yard line. Unfortunately, running back Kyren Williams fumbled at the 2, giving San Francisco the ball back. The Rams used their timeouts effectively and got the ball back after the 49ers were forced to punt.
A holding penalty on the Rams negated a strong punt return by Xavier Smith, but they pulled it together. Kicker Josh Karty nailed a 48-yard field goal, sending the game into overtime.
Overtime was tense. A penalty on Karty’s kickoff gave the 49ers great field position. They moved to the Rams’ 21 but then faced a setback when outside linebacker Byron Young took down the quarterback, forcing San Francisco to settle for a 41-yard field goal that barely went in off the upright.
The Rams’ drive stalled when they reached the 49ers’ 11-yard line. On a crucial 4th and 1, Williams was stopped, ending the game.
In defeat, Williams had 131 total yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 30 of 47 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns.
The 49ers struck first with a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Purdy to tight end Jake Tonges. They dominated the first quarter, holding the ball for nearly 12 minutes. Their lead increased to 14-0 after another touchdown pass from Purdy to Christian McCaffrey.
Despite a shaky start, the Rams responded with a touchdown. Stafford connected with Williams, narrowing the score to 14-7 just before halftime, showing they weren’t out of it yet.
