Why the Cowboys Might Rely on Four Backup Offensive Linemen: What It Means for the Season

The Cowboys are facing a tough challenge with their offensive line. On September 15, they placed center Cooper Beebe on injured reserve due to a serious ankle injury, expecting him to be out for 6-8 weeks. Brock Hoffman has stepped in as the starter since then.

This past Sunday, Tyler Bass filled in at right guard while Tyler Booker sat out with an ankle issue. The situation has worsened with two other starting linemen possibly sidelined this week. Booker and left tackle Tyler Guyton (who is out with a concussion) are confirmed out. Left guard Tyler Smith is also a concern with a knee issue—it’s unclear if he will play. Nate Thomas will take over at left tackle.

Currently, Terence Steele is the only starting lineman who is healthy. The injury list also includes safety Malik Hooker (toe), wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (ankle), and returner KaVontae Turpin (foot), all of whom will not participate. Juanyeh Thomas is set to start for Hooker.

Defensive cornerbacks DaRon Bland (foot) and Trevon Diggs (knee) have no injury concerns, which is good news for the team. However, several players, including cornerback Caelen Carson (knee) and defensive end Marshawn Kneeland (ankle), are still questionable for their upcoming game.

Injuries can deeply impact a team’s performance. Research shows that in the NFL, a significant portion of team injuries occurs on the offensive line, affecting overall productivity and play strategies. According to a 2022 study from the NFL Injury Analytics, teams with high injury rates within their offensive lines typically see a decline in their win percentage.

The Cowboys’ current situation reminds fans of past seasons when injuries led to struggles. Adapting to these changes while keeping team morale high becomes essential. As the intensity of the season ramps up, coaches and players will need to strategize carefully to navigate their injury woes.
