BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Bethlehem Inn has kicked off its annual Harvest for Hope Food Drive, aimed at stocking pantries as the winter season looms.
The need is urgent at both the Bend and Redmond locations. This food drive supports the Inn’s Meal Program, which offers three daily meals to those seeking shelter. Right now, the Inn cares for up to 180 adults and children each day.
With winter approaching, food donations are more crucial than ever. Items in high demand include coffee, creamer, oatmeal, cereal, snack packs, fruit cups, lunch meat, sliced cheese, granola bars, breakfast bars, fresh produce, and instant soup cups.
Donations can be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 20363 Mervin Sampels Road in Bend or 517 NW Birch Avenue in Redmond. Several local businesses are also hosting donation boxes for non-perishable items.
Bethlehem Inn is Central Oregon’s main emergency shelter. They provide not just meals but also safety and support services for over 1,100 individuals each year, delivering more than 100,000 meals in total.
Historically, as food insecurity has surged in colder months, initiatives like this drive have become essential. A 2023 report from the Oregon Food Bank revealed that one in four families faced hunger last winter, highlighting the ongoing struggle for many. Programs like Harvest for Hope not only aim to bridge this gap but also foster a sense of community by involving local businesses and residents.
