An elderly couple in Portland has shared a shocking experience from a recent protest. Laurie and Richard Eckman, both 84, say they were unexpectedly knocked down by federal agents while joining a peaceful demonstration outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building near their home.
Laurie described the scene, stating, “They charged at us for no reason.” Richard, a Vietnam War veteran, was leaning on his walker when they were rushed. Laurie recalled being hit in the head by a projectile during the chaos.
The Eckmans had initially intended to avoid protests. However, after seeing the peaceful rally at Elizabeth Caruthers Park from their kitchen window, they felt compelled to join. “It looked so benign,” Laurie said. They believe in standing against what they perceive as injustice, especially concerning immigration, which they feel is vital to the nation’s identity.
After a short time at the park, the crowd marched toward the ICE building. Once they arrived, federal agents suddenly appeared, arresting several protest leaders. Moments later, a group of agents stormed out and charged at the Eckmans and other peaceful protesters, knocking them to the ground.
Witnesses confirmed the Eckman’s account, expressing disbelief at the aggressive actions of the federal agents. Many people rushed to help Laurie after she fell, including a doctor who offered assistance.
Shortly after the incident, Portland police approached the couple to check on them. Laurie expressed gratitude for their concern, mentioning that the officers couldn’t directly engage with the federal agents and had to maintain a distance. After returning home, the couple went to the emergency room, where Laurie learned she had suffered a concussion, while Richard emerged uninjured.
Laurie, who was once a staunch critic of the military’s role in conflict, was taken aback by her experience. “I never thought federal officers could behave this way. I was wrong,” she said. The Eckmans want to highlight that most protesters in Portland are peaceful residents advocating for a cause they believe in, not the violent groups often portrayed in media. “We’re regular Portlanders who love our city,” she stressed.
