EASTON, Pa. — Nurture Nature Center’s Climate Action Week kicks off Monday with a variety of events aimed at getting the community involved in sustainability.
“We have a fantastic range of activities planned,” said Kate Semmens, science director at NNC. “From workshops and film screenings to clean-up efforts and art exhibits, there’s something for everyone.”
This year’s Climate Action Week includes over two dozen events from now until October 12 in Easton and Bethlehem. The focus is on educating residents about climate change and how they can take action.
“We’re making sure these events are accessible,” said Lauren Fosbenner, NNC’s project specialist. “Many are scheduled after traditional work hours or on weekends to bring in as many participants as possible.”
Among the events are gardening sessions, a “Mobile Bike Party,” and guided hikes, encouraging people to engage meaningfully with their environment. “People enjoy hands-on activities to make a difference,” Fosbenner added.
Interestingly, this week coincides with Commonwealth Sustainability Week, organized by Penn State Sustainability and the Pennsylvania GreenGov Council. They are hosting free webinars daily, covering sustainability topics that matter to the community.
One popular event is a cooking class titled “Fall-Inspired Cooking and Foraging with Guest Chef” at Butterhead Kitchen, which has a ticket price of $79.50. Most other events remain free, ensuring accessibility for everyone.
A significant highlight of the week will be art installations at the Bethlehem Area Public Library and Easton Area Public Library. Six local artists are working on interactive pieces that encourage community involvement and awareness about climate issues. “These installations symbolize how we can unite for meaningful change,” said Semmens.
Participants can also share their thoughts in a communal art book and receive eco-friendly kits with reusable items. It’s a way for attendees to engage beyond the week itself and foster longer-term sustainable habits.
Nurture Nature Center aims to highlight sustainability not just during Climate Action Week but throughout the year. “Even if they can’t make it this week, there will be ongoing opportunities to participate,” Fosbenner noted.
With the backdrop of climate change increasingly impacting various aspects of life, grassroots efforts like this highlight community action. Research shows that local initiatives can significantly influence public support for sustainability. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 70% of Americans believe that local action is crucial to combating climate change.
