Every year, the Libby StandDown in Northwest Montana offers vital support for veterans. It’s a day when the community truly comes together for those who served.
Matthew Rosine from Montana VA noted, “The whole community has opened its arms to Montana veterans today, and trust me, it’s appreciated.” The event takes place at the Libby Memorial Events Center, making it one of the largest gatherings of its kind in the United States.
Pamela Koller, CEO of the Northwest Montana Veterans Food Pantry, shared that veterans travel from far and wide: “We see folks from Eureka, Missoula, Spokane, and even states like Arizona and Colorado.” This event is a key resource for many, and in just one day, hundreds were served.
This year, the StandDown reached impressive numbers: 335 veterans received help. They gave out 85 haircuts, 69 flu shots, and distributed 111 food boxes. Resources from the Montana VA were available to assist veterans with healthcare and other benefits.
Rosine pointed out that many veterans are unaware of the benefits they qualify for, saying, “Most veterans that come in have specific health care concerns, but there’s a lot available that they just don’t know about.”
The Spokane VA Mobile Medical Unit was also present, providing essential health education. Nurse Kathleen Bernier highlighted the importance of their services, stating they distributed 25 Naloxone kits for opioid emergencies. “We hope that people are prepared to give life-saving treatment,” she explained.
While the StandDown is an annual event, support for veterans continues year-round. Rosine remarked, “Today is just one day, but many of these organizations are here for veterans every day.”
According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, nearly 1 in 5 veterans report facing challenges related to mental health and access to services. Events like the StandDown not only provide immediate assistance but also foster long-lasting community connections, showing that support for veterans is both a priority and a shared responsibility.
