Discover the Magic of Imani Winds and Harlem Quartet in Iowa: A Must-See Musical Experience!

With A.B. Spellman, Orator
Passion for Bach and Coltrane

This event is part of Hancher’s 53rd season.

Presented with the help of the University of Iowa String Quartet and the Woodwind Ensemble Residency Programs.

This collaborative performance celebrates music’s greats: Bach and Coltrane. Jeff Scott, known for founding the Imani Winds, created the Grammy-winning oratorio Passion for Bach and Coltrane. The current Imani Winds ensemble, the Harlem Quartet, and a jazz trio will play this piece at The Englert Theatre. A.B. Spellman, a celebrated poet and music critic, will deliver the powerful narration.

PROGRAM:
Jeffrey Scott: Passion for Bach and Coltrane
An eight-movement suite for wind quintet, string quartet, jazz trio, and orator.

Critics praise this unique blend of musicians. The Philadelphia Inquirer highlights their “technical ease” and “intense production of sound.” NPR celebrates the Harlem Quartet’s “vibrant tone” and energetic performances.

Recent studies show that diverse collaborations in music can enhance creativity. According to the 2022 report from the National Endowment for the Arts, such partnerships not only bring fresh perspectives but also help preserve cultural histories through new interpretations. Events like this remind us of the rich connections between different musical styles and traditions.
