PHILADELPHIA – Bryce Harper believes it’s time for the Phillies to change their game plan. Together, they had a dismal showing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going just 5-for-35 in the first two games of the NL Division Series.
With a hefty payroll of $291.7 million, the stakes are high, and the pressure is palpable. Manager Rob Thomson noted that players might be trying too hard instead of focusing on making solid contact. “The power will come,” he assured fans, reflecting a sense of optimism amid the tension.
In Game 2, the Dodgers held the Phillies to only three hits in eight innings, demonstrating their pitching strength. Philadelphia did show some life in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win. The game’s outcome pushed the Phillies to the brink of elimination.
Turner, who has had a stellar season, was unable to deliver in critical moments, ending the game with a groundout. The struggles of these top hitters are familiar. In past playoff runs, the Phillies faced similar challenges, often relying on home runs they haven’t managed to deliver this time around.
Phillies’ ace Zack Wheeler is out due to recovery from surgery, which adds to the urgency for their pitching staff. Cristopher Sanchez and Jesus Luzardo have stepped up, but their efforts haven’t translated into victories. Game 3 will see Aaron Nola on the mound, who must rise to the occasion despite a less-than-stellar season.
With a history of playoff defeats, including losses in the last two years’ World Series and Conference Series, the team’s future is uncertain. A sweep could spell doom for key players like Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, who may become free agents if the season ends prematurely.
Interestingly, statistics show that teams with a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five postseason series have won 80 out of 90 times, making the odds against Philadelphia. The players know they need to flip the script and dig deep to keep their season alive. Despite the struggles, Harper reminded everyone, “We’re a good team. Anything can happen.”
